CURRENT #30: TWICE- MORE & MORE

Updated: Jun 6, 2020

Released: June 1st, 2020

Despite what everyone may say about TWICE, you cannot deny how infectious their title tracks are. Each of those songs have their own individual charms, from the unpredictable lighthearted musical styles of Cheer Up and TT, to the more upbeat and lively tunes of Knock Knock and Fancy, to the catchy refrains of Likey and Dance The Night Away. Every single of these pop-sensation tracks were designed to get into your head quickly, and has been responsible for catapulting TWICE to the platform as the nation's top girl group. With such power also means a whole bunch of responsibility, where you have to continue to defend your throne. With that being said, what does Twice have in store for us to keep up with their recent successes of hits? More & More falls within the crossroads between tropical and deep house, with a little dose of dubstep injected later on. Moody atmospheric sounds in the beginning already distinguishes More & More from the energetic intros of many of their other singles, but it's still engaging enough to intrigue the listener. The verse finds itself on a gentle up-slope to the song's bread and butter, starting with the "more and more" refrains. Things get a little bit fuzzy with a sudden shift to a trap beat, when the verse was still developing itself.

Unfortunately that was the only good part of the song. Twice falls victim to the tropical house curse, where all that momentum stalls with a mediocre beat drop infused with deep house synths. It was effective with Dance The Night Away because its beat drop was so explosive and proceeded a slow but uplifting pre-chorus. In More & More though it's the opposite. The brief pause right before the beat drop, the lack of any progression in the pre-chorus, the lousy repetitive "more and more" chants, and an uninspiring upbeat sound all contributes to a production that is very lazy and forgettable. It's not until the bridge that things finally start to sound a little more interesting with the return of dubstep. It's also the first time TWICE has attempted to do a dance break in a title track. The annoying vocal effects in the chorus find somewhat of a home here, and while it's a nice change of scenery overall, it's still nothing revolutionary.

Twice's second experiment with tropical house is an utter failure that will surely have fans missing the energetic pulses of Dance The Night Away. Twice went on a gentle hill of downstream success starting with Yes or Yes, followed by the respectable Fancy and Feel Special, but More & More is a huge step back. Sure the goal must have been to show a more sentimental side of Twice, but this track ultimately doesn't do it justice. People may have ridiculed Twice's talent through their past songs, but I am feeling even more nostalgic about them after listening to More & More.
