The ongoing flux of new girl groups this month never stops! Now the third girl group to debut in May after Woo!Ah! and Secret Number, Redsquare shows how they are different from the other two with their debut single Colorfull. Woo!Ah! went for a more innocent cutsy concept while hitting hard with the electro-synths, while Secret Number went for more of a brass-thumping sound. Colorfull seems to mesh somewhere in between those 2 singles, where the overall amplitude barely reaches a crescendo, but is still full of attitude and grit. Does Colorfull really back up their claim they can be any color out there? Yeah I'm sorry but I can't help but laugh at those lyrics. Anyways, the main blueprint behind the design of Colorfull is the heavy use of the synthesizer, but I felt like I just went on a time machine, as the synthesizer takes us back to the sounds of previous decades throughout the song. Colorfull's rhythm consists of a laid-back mid-tempo clapping beat led by a brass-heavy synth, which leaves plenty of space for the synthesizer to churn out additional melodies. The keyboard in the latter half of the verse reminds me of the K-pop of the early 2010s, but the pre-chorus may be the biggest highlight of Colorfull. Reminiscent of the 80s, the synth used and its melody is pure bliss, especially after you hear the rest of the song. I also like its gradual crescendo as it willingly takes us to the next part. The chorus also gives off a retro vibe, although its synth melody isn't quite as risk-taking and impactful as that of the pre-chorus. However, I am fond of the sing-along nature in the part, and the layered vocals sound quite strong together. The song has both its legendary and bland moments; notably in the chants in the beginning and in some parts in the rap. Lyrics aside, I wouldn't describe its flow as cringe, but I am pretty glad Redsquare didn't repeat those chants again in the song. The chorus actually is pretty well-engineered, although hearing it the first time I wasn't immediately convinced. Compared to the pre-chorus, it's a little underwhelming, especially given the song's rhythm, but the melody is refreshing and still easy to follow along with. And then we have the pre-chorus, which is a beauty of a gem. Longevity-wise, Colorfull could actually make some noise.
