CURRENT #3: G-IDLE- Oh My God

Updated: Apr 19, 2020

Released: April 6th, 2020

Before hearing about G-Idle's comeback, I was still jamming to Latata, and I still couldn't believe the girls were just rookies at that time. Lion has also started to grow on me, despite its minimalistic production, and so here they are just 5 months later since then. Led by powerful and charismatic rapper Soyeon who killed the stages of Produce 101 and Unpretty Rapstar, G-Idle has been quickly rising to stardom, and has seen so much success in just under 2 years. Queendom continued to garn them more fans especially myself, and so I was hoping their next music release will serve as a testament to their experiences in Queendom, and as a worthy successor to Lion. Unfortunately, after listening to the title track, I felt as if the girls rushed to make the comeback in just 5 months.

To put in a few words, Oh My God's production sounds very simplistic. I said this too for Lion, but unlike this track, Lion followed a simple but acceptable formula that was bound to sound good in the long-term. Oh My God's music structure is just all over the place, and there is no clear, cohesive path to follow along with. I have absolutely no idea what is up with that intro, as the opening church bell and vocal sounds awkwardly placed. I was hoping the synth chord progression would take us to higher ground and overcome this mess, but nope, instead the song changes to a completely different sound; a trap-hop-like beat with piano used. Soyeon didn't even bother to make a seamless transition between the 2 different styles. The verse itself is good, but the production of it is nothing special, although I like the falsetto vocals. The beat picks up in the pre-chorus and there are additional instruments used, while the pace of vocals increases, easily becoming my favorite part of the song, although I don't like the brief pause in the middle. The chorus? Disappointment. An underwhelming beat-drop. All of the instruments used before have disappeared, and only the vocals are keeping the chorus from becoming too dry. What seemed so promising after a pretty lackluster beginning has only brought out more problems to the surface. The trap-hop beat fits Soyeon's rap in the second verse really well, which is a welcome addition to what has otherwise been some pretty simplistic verses. The bridge is almost non-existent, and I couldn't tell at all if I was listening to it or the third verse. At least the final chorus has a different beat to it, but by then its already too late as I've already made my judgement.

After what seemed like a promising 5 months of hiatus after Queendom, G-Idle ultimately took a step back with Oh My God. It's a shame because Soyeon is an extremely talented composer, and her parts actually meshed well with the music composition, but everything else lacked substance. The overall song structure is just uninspired and very rigidity, and the result is a comeback that will definitely have you saying "OH MY GOD", but in a not-so-nice way.
