I can't believe it's been more than 6 years since girl group Dal Shabet released BBB, which was a total BOP of 2014. Unfortunately, the girl group hasn't been on my radar ever since, which is partially my fault as I transitioned to college that year, but let's save that for another story. The last song I listened to that even involved someone from Dal Shabet was Tymee's Love is, which showcased Subin's singing capabilities, but that was it. I didn't even know Dal Shabet and Dreamcatcher were labelmates until a couple of weeks ago, but enough chit chat. Dive is a pleasant surprise that will satisfy music fans and give them another song to weather through quarantine with. It's a power ballad that contains segments of both sad and reassuring moods simultaneously. The intro starts off with a soothing piano melody, followed by Subin's vocals. Subin starts off calm, but takes her time to pick up pace. I am by no means a vocal expert, but I really like how airy her singing is, to where your ear can pick up and appreciate both the vocals and the accompanied piano. The verses and the pre-chorus definitely give off the "Everything's going to be okay" vibe, while the chorus screams to your face why you should feel that way. It's not quite as melodic as the verses, but vocal-wise it truly packs a punch. The additional vocal layers and her solo parts are solid and makes up for the lack of distinction in the instrumentals. But then we transition into personally my favorite part of the song; a retro 80s like percussion sound (if anyone can tell me what the instrument is, that be really great!) leading the second verse. There's something so soothing about the sound, and it accompanies Subin's vocals very well. I really wished they played that percussion more throughout the entire song. The last chorus is a proper conclusion and climax to what has been an epic vocal performance, although I felt as if in some areas the additional vocals are too loud and diverts some attention away from Subin, when she clearly has the ability to sing just like that too.
If you're a fan of stellar vocal arrangements, then Dive is certainly a treat to feast on. Even if you're not, I think this song will do a lot to lift up our spirit, especially in times like right now. I hope this song will allow Subin to get her name out there as a singer and energize her solo career. Her vocals more than makes up for a pretty decent song production. It's one of the best performances vocally so far this year and I am looking forward to see what she has in store next (hopefully another collaboration with Dreamcatcher?)
